The project: A month-long stint of pounding the fields and lanes of Sussex in my hapless and ill-advised attempt to complete a quintessentially English 5k race between two local pubs. Yes, a pint of beer awaits every finisher!
Dear Reader,
I was surprised when I woke up at 5 o’clock this morning, not because it’s unusual for me to be awake at that time – it isn’t – but because I woke up awake at that time. Wide awake.
‘Gosh!’ I thought. ‘Why am I so happy to be up?’ I was suspicious. Might I just be excited to be going for a run? Well, maybe. I was feeling great, and, possibly as a result of my muscle-stretching homage to the ‘Ministry of Silly Walks’ yesterday, not a single muscle was screaming.
And then I opened the bedroom curtains.
Yup. Reader, it’s a good thing that I have alternatives to running up my sleeve: today I hit the Tube1, not the trail!
My indoor exercise session today was a throwback to that first Covid lockdown, when I became improbably fit (not to mention alarmingly muscular) as a result of a sudden-onset and long-lasting YouTube exercise video obsession.
It was great to get reacquainted with Daniel and Alex from Team Body Project (not an advert: I just love them), and I picked my favourite video, 27 minutes and 17 seconds of Triple Pump Cardio.
For added giggles I thought I’d use weights, but discovered after thirty seconds – when one of my ankle weights came flying off and nearly hit the screen – that Velcro isn’t indestructible. Oh well, it was just the hand weights for today, then.
Fancy having a go? (No weights are required, as Alex and Daniel will tell you.) It’s great fun, I promise.
Is it reckless for me to say that I’m feeling fitter already? I know it takes a while to pin down a new habit, but with how I’m feeling today I might even want to keep moving even after I’ve got this 5k race under my belt.
And tomorrow I might even make it outside.
Love,
Rebecca

YouTube, not the London Underground. 😉
"ankle weights came flying off, nearly hitting the screen" - 🤣
Well done! I remember that glorious feeling of WANTING to get out and run. What an awful feeling to see that rain!! Oh no!
I worked on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean for a year back in the 80s. I remember thinking ‘Why not go running in the rain?’ I made it as far as the front gate. I had rarely experienced ‘tropical rain’ and hadn’t realised that it would literally be impossible to actually SEE with soaked hair in the eyes and water pouring down my face.
Congratulations on remembering that there are other alternatives! It’s 9pm over here, so I will leave the exercise video until tomorrow (or the day after), but What Fun!!! There’s an Aussie company trying to get us ‘oldies’ fitter and stronger but it’s amazing how easy it is to not do it!! Sigh….
I’m currently housesitting in a proper town and they have a heated pool a five minute walk away. I try to fit in a swim every two or three days because it is such a pleasure! I’m an incredibly slow swimmer but the body really does enjoy sensible exercise.
Anyway, this is proof that somebody is reading and enjoying your posts!! Cheering you on from far off Australia. Sending heaps of hugs and best wishes. Take care dear Rebecca. All the best.
