Ride a bike! Save your knees!

Yeah, I’ll bear that in mind, Amran! 🤣

Better for the knees? I should try then. I must save my knees. 😞

I've just added 'get bike out of shed and use it' to my list! 🙂🚲

Olga, that's so kind of you - thank you! I hope I get some fitness back between now and the race - even though it's a distance I used to run multiple times a week, anything beyond 50 metres in one go is beyond me at the moment! 🤣

I feel tired just thinking about this. Either go by bike, like what do, or go by bus, which is also like work I do.

I meant what, not work, but 8 can't edit it. Bah! 😡

Understood already, Terry! 😊

LOL! Sadly, no bus runs between those two pubs, Terry. I'm going HAVE to run this race... 😉

Speaking of bikes, in the lead-up to running it the first time, a few years ago now, I thought I'd try out the route on my bike. It was a great ride to the starting line.... downhill ALL the way. 'Great!' I thought...

...and then realised that the race route was of course the OPPOSITE direction, UPHILL.

Wherever I cycle it's uphill in both directions

I am not surprised to find I'm not surprised by this revelation, Terry. 😉😆

Rebecca - 2 rules for your running enjoyment:

10 Don't over train

2) Don't under recover

: )

Rebecca Holden's avatar

James, that's so kind of you - you're absolutely right! In my previous running career I did BOTH of these things ALL of the time...!

Your comment has reinforced to me exactly why I've set up my Jog log 🏃🏻 here on Substack - it's because community and accountability go a long way when it comes to the chance of keeping an all-or-nothing wannabe runner on track! 🙌 Thank you so much. 😊

Of course you can. You can WALK five kilometres if necessary, urged on by the pint at the end. Enjoy!

Rebecca Holden's avatar

Thanks, Beth! I'm grateful to myself that it's only a 5k I've signed up for! I've run this race twice before - last time I did so was on one of the hottest days that summer, and it took me LONGER than if I'd actually just set out to walk it. 🤣

Good for you , making this plan, Rebecca. I have to say that from the back you already look to be in great shape. I loved reading your jog logs. More proof that there is a story every where!

Rebecca Holden's avatar

Aww, thanks, Sharron! I figured with a team behind me - that's what you all are, right? - I'm not going to allow myself to fail! 🤣

Thank you for the compliment! In fact that picture was taken when I'd just started training for my first 10k, which was in early 2017. I'm not all that different now at first glance, but there is a definite layer of I'm-a-size-bigger-cos-I'm-nearly-fifty puffiness around the edges....! 🤣

You can do it!

I have been injured too because I loved running before. I pushed myself too far and too hard that I got a couple of injuries. One needed stitiches and now the knee pain is just there. I've varied my fitness activities but I miss running.

That's so kind - thank you!

It's often the way, isn't it, how we can find something we love and then overdo it? I feel like I'm right back at the drawing board with the whole exercise thing, but golly gosh, I'm already loving it. I know I need to be more careful this time, and that's one reason why I'm so glad to have such brilliant advice from lovely people right here! 🙂

I also had the same experience as you when I discovered I liked exercise. I did it alllll the time, then I suddenly got bored. I've also been starting up again slow.

Good for you! I started running in my mid thirties and I don't know if I love it so much as I need it now. And now I'm trying to do better about adding in weights and some cross training to save my knees.

Rebecca Holden's avatar

Thanks, Sarah! My knees relate to your knees! 😘

I guess if I hadn't kept getting injured (note to self: STOP WHEN IT HURTS) I wouldn't have ever given up running. I loved how it made me feel, and the investment I was putting in to futureproof my body. I'm taking it much more gently this time.
