Tips for solving the word puzzle, in case you need them:

1. Look at the structure of the words, not their meanings.

2. It will help if you write out the words out in CAPITAL LETTERS.

Put me down on the list for one of your multitools if you ever do find a mad inventor to make one - you had me at kettle & notebook, but tweezers & nail clippers too? Chefs kiss! 🤣

I read ‘Enchantment’ by Katherine May over Christmas and it was quite lovely, so will be hoping Jubilee library has a copy of ‘Wintering’ in next time I visit. Also really enjoyed the Michelle Obama memoir on audio. I’m more of a podcast listener than audiobooks generally but I agree that was an excellent example. X

Oooooooh, I haven’t read ‘Enchantment’ - I shall seek it out! Thanks, Vicki!

LOL re multitool. Sure, I have tweezers and nail clippers in the bathroom, but it would be soooo great to carry some around with me on a fancy gadget so that I can deal with splinters and cut wires and impossible-to-get-into packaging, which is what I use those tools for the most! 🤣

I’m now 16 hours in to the 18-hour audiobook and already devastated that I’ve nearly finished it! Still, that’s the sign of a fabulous book, so that’s fine!

Must have missed that episode of only connect!

Just finished Enchanted by Katherine May on library audiobook, they don't seem to have Wintering or that'd be next!!

Oooooh, now, that’s two recommendations for ‘Enchanted’! Definitely going to read it now!

I LOVE Only Connect - especially the Connecting Wall round. The word puzzle I pinched was from an earlier round - although it’s very much the same sort of thing!

Yes, really love it too, connecting wall is great! I need to read 'Wintering' listened to a podcast with Katherine talking about it.

That blurb about doners is a disgrace. I second every question you had and add this: "A true doner can only be made of chicken, lamb, or beef...?" NO! A true doner can be made ONLY of chicken, lamb or beef.

I loved your idea for a multi-use tool. Dream on, girl...

Every morning I play CONNECTIONS on line at the New York TImes and it is often very difficult. However, the example you have given here is a total mystery to me. Haven't a clue....

I’m such a big fan of Connections on the NYT site - Jim and I have a cup-of-tea ritual first thing every day which sees us tackling the Mini crossword, Wordle and then Connections, in that order.

Hint for the puzzle I’ve challenged you with: don’t look at what the words mean, but at their structure.

Oh, and try writing them down in capital letters. That will help.

I’m going to put those two hints up as a pinned comment! x

Okay, then, some sort of partial anagram going on.... let's see...

Oh. Yes! I got the pattern! Thanks for the hint.

Laughed out loud on this one, RH, especially the non-itchy sweaters part. This was such a great post, first word to last. I'm still smiling. I also think it would be fun to draw your multi-tool. Maybe that will go on my to-draw list, too. 😁

Oooooh! Hey, what would your ideal multitool include? Sooooo many things spring to mind - a puncture-repair kit, an electronic chip with your library card information, a post-it pad labelled ‘BrewTime-to-Go’, art materials……..?

Expand full comment

What a great question about my ideal multitool . . .BrewTime To Go art materials are fantastic, as is the e-chip with my library card info (Jim's memorized his) . . . I've often played the pretend game of if I had to live outdoors for an undetermined or determined time, what ten things would I gather, if I could only have ten. I love that game, actually. Some things on the list change, but these are givens: 1- a large heavy duty tarp, 2 - an axe or large special saw to cut down trees, 3 - fire-making flint, 4 - a roll of fishing twine, 5 -a shovel, 6- a multi-use vessel for catching/carrying water, 6 - a waterproof down sleeping bag with with enough down to protect against sub-zero temps, 7 - a journal with an attached pen (I think that should count as 1 item), 8 - my Bible, 9 - salt. The last item changes, depending on my mood. Do you ever play that game? 😃

Ooooh, I’m so excited by your whole list, Mary - that’s brilliant! I’ve never done that - well, apart from in my light-hearted multitool brainstorming last week - I shall have to come up with my own list of proper survival stuff! I’ll report back! x

Love that! I also noticed I have 2 "6"s in my list 😄, so I've used up my 10 items. It would be handy to have a pal on this survival adventure, or a Jim, and be able to pool resources so there would be twenty items all told.

Ooooh, good plan! And hey, a Jim would be handy to carry some of it! 🤣

An easy puzzle; a cool tool; and I’ve only recently discovered audiobooks. I listened to John Green’s ‘The Anthropocene Reviewed’ while driving and found it addictive so have moved onto a couple of Australian autobiographies - partway through the fascinating life of Gina Chick with Darren Hayes to follow. I’d bought a digital copy of Becoming but haven’t had a chance to get to it, so I might splash out on the audiobook too. There are SO MANY ways to fill our days. I’ll never understand how people can be bored.

Another fun read. Thanks so much.

Awww, thanks, Beth - and well done with the puzzle! I thought it was really clever - the words themselves are a red herring! 🤣

I’ve recently given up listening to podcasts - no, I shouldn’t say that - it’s just that a while ago I found I was favouring really getting stuck in to one big thing (eg a paperback novel, an ebook or an audiobook) rather than the short form equivalents - like reading little things online, or short little podcast episodes - which I find are too energy-sapping right now; so I replaced the podcasts and radio episodes for longer things - in that way I can choose to pick up and leave off as often as I like, but as I already know what it’s about it’s easier for me to concentrate on.

(Hmmm, I hope that doesn’t sound too bonkers. I’m not sure I’ve explained it very well!) xxx

I can't wait to read your memoir someday, Rebecca. Thanks for the smiles this week. :)

You’ve come across a lot of the stories already! I wonder how I can knit them into a whole book? xxx

I really enjoy reading your letters to Terry. It's somehow therapeutic. It brings me back to the days when I was fondly writing letters to friends. It's like how I imagine conversations should be which starts off with "How was your day?" We need more of these conversations these days. Back then, if we cannot do it face to face, thank God for letter-writing!

Expand full comment

Oh, that’s so kind, and letters are such fun, aren’t they? I can’t believe (well, I can, because we both enjoy it so much!) that it’s been so long since Terry had first invited me to be a regular correspondent for what had started as a three-week ‘Substack Letters’ project in 2022! I’m having a lovely time with it, and I’m so happy you’re enjoying the letters too! Hugs! x
