Well! A ‘swimsuit spin drier’??? And fruit and cream sandwiches? And yes, Wimbledon. Yay! Brilliant post. And don’t fret, I won’t Google corpses…. Shudder.
Yes, we have swim suit spin driers between the showers and the changing rooms. The take all the excewss water out, so yiou don't end up flooding your sports bag. I've never heard of anyone breaking one though. Must have overloaded it. Typical.
Tis only an intermittent fault, apparently. When we went again yesterday we didn't have access to the spinner because maintenance by male staff was happening in the ladies' changing rooms so ladies had to use the gents' and vice versa! THEIR spin drier was out of action entirely...!
Yes, it's great! You pop your cozzie into it and press the lid down, leave it to spin for just a few seconds then lift the lid slightly to tell it to stop, and then once it stops spinning you open it fully and grab your nicely squeezed-out swimwear. It's really handy. When it works, that is - which isn't every time, apparently!
I'd never heard of a strawberries and cream sandwich - it's interesting that fruit sandwiches are a thing in Japan. *Might* try one one day (homemade, not by M&S, though!)!
Thanks so much for reading! Hope you're keeping cosy Down Under! 🍓
So much better of a read this morning than a doom-scroll! 😘
As for reading material… “My biggest regret and fear is that I shall never live long enough to have read all the books on my list”. I think it may be a paraphrase from a famous quote. But still as apropos today as the many years ago that I heard it. 🫶🏻
Awww Gail, how lovely! Thank you. And yes, there is soooooo much out there still to read, with amazing new writing appearing all the time! Hurrah and ARRRRRRGHHHHHHHHH, all at the same time!
I took your advice and did NOT google those lyrics. I have enough grisly stuff haunting my brain to deal with. Thanks for the heads-up! Regarding the swymming: You are rocking it! Even once a week helps, right?
Re swymming - thank you so much! I feel EPIC, because we went again yesterday! Tuesday's swim had been more of a recce than anything - I used to be a member of the health club and went pretty much every day, but it's changed a great deal since then, so we were just getting a feel for being back there. Yesterday (our second visit in two days!) was absolutely awesome - it feels wonderful to actually move my body at more than snail's pace! I've been slow and lopsided now for ages, and it's really tedious to not be walking in a straight line.... but it seems that I can SWIM in a straight line! And at normal speed, too! Ha! Had such a lovely time at the pool, and I'm looking forward to plenty more visits.
I'm taking it very easy today because it seems it's caught up with me a little. Still, small steps, right?! And hey, all is well. I'll get to the bottom of all of this nonsense eventually, I know I will! 😁
Please do let us know how you are doing, Rebecca. I know it is a personal issue, but we all love you so much and want you well! I hate the thought of you limping about when you have so much history with those big old hiking boots! ( I would love it if you re-posted one of your hiking tales - like the one getting lost on a circular path around the lake!)
Awwww, you’re so kind - I often feel as though I’m oversharing - but I’ve been mentioning my not-quite-healthy-health by way of justifying my very flaky participation in everything Substack. All will be well, I’m sure it will!
I’m going to dust down a hiking tale in your honour, you lovely lady. Thank you! ☺️
No justification needed, Rebecca. We will read your posts whenever you send them! Heck, you could post from your archives for two months and we would be delighted!
You are so lucky! Thanks to no right-side balance, I can’t swim in a straight line. OK in a pool with a line to follow but in the ocean, my preferred pool, I err to the left…
Balance is my bete noir. I lost all of my rightside balance in a vestibular incident 10 years ago. After 3 months of intense therapy, similar to what a brain injury patient would have, I learned to handle life in, out and on the water.
I can no longer do any sort of twist underwater and more than 50 metres of freestyle and I am very dizzy. Backstroke is quite difficult (I was a backstroke champion in my teens) as I can no longer lie back with my head flat.
On the water, in my kayak, it has to be mirror calm and my ENT specialist stresses the need not to fall in as the tumble might disorient and cause all manner of problems. When we go out in our boat, I can’t handle much of a swell and winds have to be under 12 knots. Being a lover of all things sea-related, it’s been hard but I’m still out there!
On land, I had to give up horseriding as the bounce of a canter or trot was awful. A long journey, with landscape whizzing by is equally vertiginous. Escalators, lifts - all require care. Plane flights can only be short haul as long haul means the cabin pressure is too high for my ears. Supermarket aisles and busy traffic has an effect and when I go to the theatre, I have to close my eyes if there’s strobe lighting.
But I run, hike, walk the dog, do ballet (no turns but BRILLIANT for balance) garden. In life, as long as I don’t turn too quickly, everything’s okay.
The brain is malleable and neuroplasticity has to be the best thing ever. XXXX
I Googled the lyric but got nowhere which has me wondering why Terry remembers the line so well.
I think that library receipt is an incredible marketing tool.
Hurrah for your swim! That's wonderful news!
Don't think less of me, but I've never much loved strawberry ice cream 🍓 nor really any fruit-infused ice cream, nor fruit on my cereal. I know. I'm an odd 🦆!
I'm hoping Terry will be able to answer his own question in his reply, Elizabeth - I'm still completely in the dark as to which film it might be!
I'm really proud of my swim - thank you so much! And we went yesterday, too - that's twice in two days. I'm feeling it today, though..... 🫣
I don't think any less of you for not liking strawberry ice cream - it's not my favourite, either. Actually, though, Mum used to make her own strawberry ice cream when I was little - not using a machine or anything, so it was always solid and very crunchy with ice crystals because of the high water content in the fruit and the fact that wasn't churned, but golly gosh, it was amazing. It was absolutely nothing like the strawberry ice cream that was available in shops at the time - you know, bright, bright pink and soft and oversweet and really sickly, and had obviously NEVER been within five miles of an ACTUAL strawberry. Mum's ice cream was a sort of buff-brown colour, because the mashed-up fruit in the cream wouldn't keep its colour in the freezer, and it wasn't too sweet. Happy, happy, delicious memories. 🍓

Wow. So handy. Intriguing.
Definitely!

Another example of feminine toxicity: blaming the patriarchy for a broken spin drier. Typical 😡
Not at all. It's the spin driers themselves which are toxic - they really should pull themselves together.
Well it was very gallant of them to agree to swap over. The age of chivalry is still very much alive.
🤣 Pfffffffffff!
😂

So many books, so little time.
exactly

As long as the final isn't contested by a giant blancmage and a Scotsman, it should be fine (Terry knows what I mean, I'm sure)...
No I don't! Please elucidate. Chortle.
Monty Python’s “Science Fiction Sketch”. They make it clear when “They mean to win Wimbledon” is uttered.
LOL. Thanks. I must have missed that. Must look it up. Thanks, David.
It’s in the TV episode titled “You’re No Fun Anymore”.
Oh thanks 😊
I'm going to have to seek that out, David! LOL!
🤣

Wise move, Sharron!

Oh gosh, Prue, that’s really interesting. Do you have balance issues when you’re walking, or is it just when you’re swimming?
And I absolutely love love love how you’ve called the ocean your preferred pool - that’s beautiful! x

A very chortlesome letter that I am looking forward to replying to. <snigger>
