I struggle to not eat pre-prepared ‘meals’ early. A nicely wrapped SPAM and tomato sauce sandwich would definitely not last long in my hands. Yum, yum.
Another cool read. (I just have a short attention span and have already forgotten all the rest. Sigh.) (Such a shame we can’t see the article while we type a comment.) (I’m using an iPad) (Hugs 🤗🤗)
The AWOL meatball ... where she ended up, one can only imagine. As for the two-month wait for pudding? To hell with that. Pass the Bourbons, the Ginger Nuts and the Jammy Dodgers - right now. Delightful read, Rebecca. As always.
Ha! I was baffled, Sharron! I'd been expecting to find the missing meatball squashed on top of another one hidden under the label, or to find that one meatball was twice the size of its friends. With hindsight, I should have popped them onto the scales to see if the packet contained the correct weight of product.
The thing that had disappointed me about the pudding - and okaaaay, so it was an article about what to do with ingredients which had been kicking around for a while - was that there was no advance warning that so much time was required. I mean, my parents would make rumtopf every year using soft fruit that we'd grown - strawberries, plums, etc - so I did know that it takes time (they'd start it in summer and enjoy it at Christmas), but if you're just flicking through the magazine and thinking 'ooooh, that sounds nice - I'll make that tonight', well it's a no-go.
Should've been a disclaimer right at the top of the page: 'Don't bother getting your spoon out yet - it's gonna be a long wait'.
And yeah, you're right. I wouldn't bother. It would have been much nicer to give the recipe for the rice pudding part of the pud and then say 'if you've got leftover rumtopf from Christmas, or a half-empty jar of maraschino cherries or a jar of lemon curd that's kicking around, all of those would make excellent accompaniments'. Sigh......
Ah . . . SPAM! I've never had it on a sandwich, but imagine to some it's a delight! The songs you mentioned you and your friends sang on the bus made me smile. We call(ed) them "camp songs" because we sang those and a few more on the way to, while being at, and the way home from, summer camp. The best memories!
The missing meatball deserves a Rebecca story perhaps . . . makes me wonder if the operator of the machine, or the operator proper, filling the package was thinking about SPAM and lost count and track of how many meatballs there were in the package before sealing it up.
Oh, yes, there must be a story in the missing meatball, Mary! Good thinking! I'm thinking perhaps the Meatball Song needs a few verses added which are specific to the factory production line.....
Oh, I love sauerkraut - it’s one of my favourite things to eat, and I love to make my own! It’s an excellent addition to coleslaw, but I’ll have a spoonful on loads of things!
I don’t think I’ve ever tried Spam. When I was a small child I remember being given ‘luncheon meat’ sandwiches at a party - I think that’s kind of similar. Really thinly sliced in a white-bread sandwich. There might have been Branston pickle on it as well. But Spam and ketchup? Yuck!

Thanks, Beth! You're so right - actually, Jim always says 'I'm peckish, and I want .........., but it's only because I know I've GOT it'!
And yes, that's an irritation with the app! Ugh! I feel it, too! xxx

I reckon if people still received letters like yours and Terry's in the actual snailmail letterboxes, the world would be a much happier place.
As for that pudding, what wanky tosh! Who'd bother?
Awwww, what a lovely thought, Prue!

Loved this post, RH. 😊

🎶 It rolled off the conveyor belt
And unseen into the operator's apron pocket... 🎶
Hmmmm, needs work!
😂
While I know Spam is enjoyed by many, I've never had the nerve to try it, let alone add it to a lunchbox or eat it before lunch! Blarg.
I make sauerkraut which ferments for 4-6 weeks before it gets the proper tang, but count me among the 'nos' for that pudding recipe.
Keep the letters coming!

I don't know what the equivalent of "luncheon meat" would be here, but it sounds sketchy. 🤢
🤣 I guess I’d lump it under the label ‘generic Spam’! Probably bright pink and more than likely mechanically-recovered. Ugh. x
