Such a pleasure, Janey! I hope you enjoy it! I’ve had a look through the prelim stuff which is available already (the course itself doesn’t start until December) and am already excited about it! I’m not going to be making my own junk journal for it - I’ve got a little sketchbook that will be just the ticket! I’m notching that up to my current requirement for ‘achievable goals’! 🤣
I had a spot of trouble logging in to start with - I'm a nightmare with passwords and the like - I always struggle. How I ever manage to accomplish any shopping online EVER is a constant astonishment.....!
I'm counting down too, Rebecca, but instead its to warm water and beaches - things designed to ease one into better times. Our liquidambars are in the green shady phase, the tree cover is lush and I must admit I looked at the magnificence today and thought what a good autumn it will be - reds, golds, clarets and ambers lying in huge heaps all over the lawn. It will be barrowload after barrowload of good autumn exercise requiring cups of tea and nice cake to fuel the energy.
May I say beautiful artwork? You always manage to capture such essences in your artwork.
What beautiful arting and photography, and Oscar-worthy writing (if the Oscars gave a "Best of" for the written word) describing all things horticultural, from grandparents' gardens to your own and your love of the Latin botanical names. Latin rolls off the tongue in ancient glory. Beautiful post, RH, and thanks for the mention. ❤️
Oh, how lovely, Mary - thank you so very much! I still don’t quite know how all of those subjects ended up being bundled into one post, but I really enjoyed digging this one out for a rejig - it was really fun! 😘
The paint set is super. Six of the colours are from the ‘inktense’ range, which is basically ink in watercolour format. Four are ‘graphitint’, which is coloured water-soluble graphite watercolour, so those have real earthiness, granulating properties AND some sparkle, and the remaining two are from the ‘pastel’ range - one is a soft eau-de-nil kind of green, and the other is a sort of neutral grey; both opaque. They are YUMMY!!!
Thanks for the botanical education, well done Rebecca! We had winter arrive this week so our beauty has changed and it's spectacular. Enjoy your last days of autumn.
Oh my goodness, the difference between reading your post in email vs Substack version - the art was superb in email format but opening the app brought gasps of delight as all the photos shimmered with autumnal vividness!! Those colours! I still adore your art - the addition of shadows makes it jump off the page - but the whole post is exquisite. Enjoy your autumn dear Rebecca. Sending heaps of hugs and best wishes. ❤️❤️🐛🐞🍁 🍂
Oh Beth, that’s so kind of you! And gosh, how lovely that there’s such a difference viewing it in the app - I guess those pictures are much bigger! You’re in spring Down Under - another magical time of year. Hugs back! 🌱
What a beautiful newsletter!!! I loved your reminder that we don't have to be plant experts to enjoy their beauty!!! Your paintings are wonderful!!!! And I'm honored that you mentioned my work too - so kind of you!! Thank you for all of it!!!!! 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
Awww, thank you, Sue, and gosh, it’s such a pleasure! I’m ever so behind on my reading but have known for a while that next time I was doing an arty post that I wanted to share your ‘timeline’ post - such an amazing project!
I’ve got a concertina sketchbook which might be just the ticket for a timeline of my own. Or a map……. I’ve been wondering that, too. A kind of life-map atlas of Rebecca. Or even both in one!?!!!! 🤔
Hooray that you got a concertina sketchbook of your own!!!! Bravo!!!! I look forward to seeing what you do with it!! P.S. I often begin concertina projects by thinking of them - while making the first draft - as one long skinny page. After that draft is done then I go page by page.... Hugs to you - and thanks again for the mention 😊 💚💚💚💚
One long skinny page - that’s a brilliant way to look at it, to get a great idea of the ‘bigger picture’ layout right off the bat!
I did an online travel sketching class recently and the artist showed a video of the concertina journal she’d used on a trip she’d taken. She advised always paying attention to the horizon line, and that ‘you’ll see why when I show you the whole thing’. Lo and behold when she opened it out in full after her flip-through of each scene, well, as if by magic it was suddenly ONE whole long scene made up of many smaller ones, because she’d planned ahead to make sure she had the same horizon on each spread. 🙌
I’m so happy to be able to learn from people who know so much more than I do about this stuff - and that certainly includes you, Sue! ❤️
What a wonderful class you took!!!! Bravo!!!! Yes, that's exactly what I was talking about!!!! Love what you said!!! Love you as a person too!!!! Keep going!!!! 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
Autumn is my favorite season but I love the dark quiet winter too. Something so cozy about the dark mornings and early evenings.
I think appreciating the beauty of plants is as important as nurturing their growth. After all, why garden if no one stops to marvel at the lovely results?
Oh Kerry, yes, exactly what you’ve said about gardening! An appreciation for the results is so important - and I need to remember that whenever I’m out there in the freezing cold wondering why I can’t feel my filthy-dirty fingers……!
‘Dark quiet winter’ - yes! There’s some more nurturing right there. ⛄️ Cosy perfection all the way. x
This was a sparkling Saturday meditation for me, Rebecca. I read it twice. I have placed a library order for Wintering. That last photo of your mixed media leaves? What a beauty! Those leaves are so three dimensional they look like they just floated lightly down onto the paper. You are a genius!
Thank you for the Art Course link 🧡

I must have a go at getting into the site...technophobe 🙄

I really enjoyed your own art work, and musings too ❤️

Oh, how lovely, Prue! It feels so amazing to know that you’re in the other half of the year right now!
HA! Barrowloads of exercise requiring cups of tea and nice cake all sounds absolutely perfect. 😍
Really enjoyed this, Rebecca 💚
Aww, thanks, Jill! 😘
How did I miss this one? Thanks for the repost. And "big nonnies"!
Thanks so much, Mark! LOL - those big nonnies always make me laugh!
Lovely post. Thanks!
Thanks, Bryan! 😁

P.S. I put that book on hold at my library and I'm on the hunt for that paint set!!! Looks fab!
Hurrah on both counts!

Ohhhhh . . . I would want all sets, please.
Tempting, right? It’s nice that they’ve put this curated set together, though - it saves me the tricky job of having to choose! 🤣
So tempting!
Thanks for the botanical education, well done Rebecca! We had winter arrive this week so our beauty has changed and it's spectacular. Enjoy your last days of autumn.
Thanks so much, Donna! 🍁
I loved this post, Rebecca. Your artwork captures the feel of the season and its beauty.
Thank you for writing this!
Awww, thanks Mrs T. Sending love! ❤️

Rebecca, I am as always in awe of your art, those autumn leaf paintings are beautiful!
And thank you so much for sharing my own autumn post, it's much appreciated x
Oh and I meant to say that I love the term 'restive season' x
Awww, thank you! It seems to fit quite well with how I’m treating autumn this year, and indeed how it’s treating me! x
That means so much, Janet - thank you! Your autumn post is absolutely beautiful - I loved it and was so happy to share it here! 🍁

Beautiful leaf painting 🎨❤️
Awww, thank you! 😘
