I think something like a "sense of direction" is just something were born with. Of course, it sounds like you're developing a nice skill set to compensate, though. Fun read and keep up the progress! :)
You have such a fun way with words. As far as you not recognizing the parking lot, that happens when you come to a place from a different direction. I had to take a different route the other day (in the car) down a street I hadn't gone down in years. I remarked that it felt like I was in a different city. So I wouldn't worry about it.
I've taken to turning around periodically on walks to face the direction I've come from so I have some chance of recognising the route from the opposite direction. The theory is good - and I do try to remember to do it - but I can't claim that it means I can then recognise that view as somewhere I've been before.
Thank you for recounting your experience on that street you hadn't been on for years - I'm feeling much better than it's not just me! :D
Mary, it's lovely that you've said this - thank you.
It is also EXTRAORDINARY that you've said this - I'm partway through drafting a post for next Wednesday in which I draw a similar theme - it's an account of yesterday's walk, with a route deliberately chosen because I didn't know it at all, so that I could give myself grace to GET lost!
And until I got lost (because you know I still did, right?!) I felt so free!
:D :D :D
I'd love to quote your comment in that post, if I may?

Thanks, Mark, and I think you’re right - either you’ve got it or you haven’t!
I’m learning so much and using what I’ve learned more and more on my walks - so at least I’m getting somewhere even if it isn’t a ‘feel’ thing!
Practice makes perfect - well, I’m not sure about perfect ever being on the cards, but hey!! :D

That's so kind, thank you!

Being lost might be the best way to discover. Go for it without worry and the world will unravel.

Yes, of course! xo
Thank you! :D
