I depend on maps and trail markers, and a bit of the sun, but to be honest I haven't been on any long hikes in ages. I should bookmark this for my own personal safety!
Thanks, Mark! But blimey, rely on my navigation advice at your peril - you know what you’ll get!
(Short word, starts with an L……)
I’m in awe of people like you who can steer themselves by the sun. I mean, I get that you can, but I never quite get it myself. That’s one of the (many) things I’m practising in my research.
I had a great walk this morning, from point A to point B west along the coast. All I had to remember was to keep the sea on my left! 🤣
Sounds like that class was very helpful and thanks for the tips! Growing up, we didn't have smartphones so road trips always included a map. Now, sadly, I'm too dependent on smartphone GPS and don't know what I'd do if I had to go back to reading a map, lol. Great post, Rebecca!
Rebecca, You not only made me laugh, but I have to tell you that, though I can navigate my way through thousands of books, I'm often lost--and have been since I was a kid except when taking repeated routes, like the walk to school. I've use the excuse that this lost-ness has to do with my creative mind. Not sure everyone buys that. But I'm still using it with a smile and a detour.
It's so nice to hear that I'm not alone - I think it's only since I 'came out' about this whole getting lost thing that I've started to find out that others have struggles similar to mine!
And yes yes yes - what a lovely thought that lostness is connected with creativity - I'd like to think so! You might be on to something!
Hi, Rebecca, I'm betting I can help you with that non-fiction book you wanna write. If you write me @ mltabor@me.com with your email address, I'll give you one month free to my paid posts. Sure I'm trying to build readership as you are too. Also, I believe we are more than simpatico--and I want you to get to know what I'm doing.
Personally, I have never used a compass. Maybe because I've never become lost. But I guess there's always a first time. :) You say "ask me how I know" on #2. I'm assuming you have a story about that.
I’d never used a compass until this course, and to be honest I can only do one basic thing with it so far! I’m in awe of mountaineers who take bearings and calculate for derivation.... I am waaaaay off that kind of stuff.
The ‘ask me how I know’ line was simply to reinforce that I WAS holding it upright and all over the place! No wonder the needle didn’t know whether it was coming or going.
I love this "how to" style of post!

Thanks, Mark. I did find it helpful - it was a good start. I just need confidence and to trust myself that I can do it, I think.

Thanks, Mary!

Mary, thanks so much for reaching out with your very kind offer! I’ll drop you a line over the weekend. :D

(Rather like me, in fact.)
