It was such fun, and I'm glad it shows! Thanks so much, Mitchell!

Is that bodyguard available for hire? I would like to avail their services too 😁

Of course! Chortle!

Hahahaha!!! Chuckle, chuckle. Love it, love it, love it. Your attention to detail and ability to shower all around you in hot beverages is admirable!! And look at those smiles!! Absolutely adorable. Thank you SO much. 🤗🤗😘

Beth, what can I say? I am well-practised in the art of showering hot beverages over people, and I consider it an art form. Perhaps I should have warned Terry and Elaine in advance...?!

This is the best way for me to get out of bed and start my day--with hearty laughter! It’s barely 6:45 AM here, and must be almost time for your lunch and a “cuppa” on your little ‘chunk’ of the planet.

Thoroughly enjoyed your meet-up with Terry and Elaine. Although I can’t help but feel when it comes to trying to be helpful, our height and coltish countenance of being all arms and legs does make for some entertaining, if somewhat embarrassing moments. Fortunately we can always laugh later about our humiliations of showering drinks on others.

I wish we had the much smaller shoe eating vixens to fear here on my corner of the planet! In Maine, my biggest fear is seeing a bear up close and personal. Which I have yet to experience and intend that I never do! They would eat the whole person and spit out the shoes. Just kidding.

OK, time to get out of bed and do my walkabout. Thank you for jumpstarting my day and I shall be replaying your story in my head as I wander. Maybe I’ll even chance getting lost. 😉 🤗

LOL, Gail! And yes, being all arms and legs does result in proportionate clumsiness, doesn't it?!

BEARS! You have bears - yes, of course you do! My uncle lives in upstate New York and has his share of ursine encounters. The only bears I know are the fluffy ones I grew up with - https://rebeccaholden.substack.com/p/58-restoring-a-relationship

I'm so glad you enjoyed this post - I'm pleased it was such a great start to your day. Hope you had a great walkabout and didn't get lost - although there's no shame in that (because you're in such great company)!!! 🤣

I loved reading about you and Jim's meeting with Terry and Elaine. :).

Thanks, Julie! 😊 It was a fun meet-up - and an even more fun post to write. And I didn't spill a SINGLE drop of coffee or milk in the process of the latter! 🤣

What a great storytelling Rebecca! You had me laughing and smiling much of the way. :) Lovely photos.

The idea of meeting someone you have come to "know" only through correspondence is so intriguing.

I thoroughly enjoyed you account of the meeting and the pictures too.

Thanks, Jim - I'm so glad you enjoyed the read and the pictures. And I agree - the idea intrigued us, too. I'm so glad to have had the opportunity to meet Terry, and I hope that we get to do it again! 😊

I think Chunk is a technical term. It might be Terry that needs to brush up on Geography.

author

Anna, I'd say you're absolutely right! 😉 Thank you! 😊

Expand full comment

Typical. I was useless at geography at school and spent most of most lessons daydreaming, but I am pretty sure the term "chunk" was never mentioned. I would have remembered it, along with dalmatian coastline (the only thing I DO remember)!😁

Love the photos. My fellow substackers are adorbs. Entourage as well. Was hubby the designated photographer/paparazzi? And after all your tea musings coffee was the beverage of choice. Hehehe.

Thanks so much! And yes - Jim was the snapper! I think for our next meet-up we'll have to find a tea room rather than a coffee shop otherwise Terry and I will lose all credibility! 🤣

Yes, please. 4:00 tea with cucumber sandwiches. (Is that still a thing?) I can then live vicariously.

Expand full comment
author

🤣 YES YES YES! 'Afternoon tea' is still a thing - but as a celebration for a special occasion rather than a daily routine - and cucumber sandwiches are certainly delicious!

In fact I enjoyed sharing a lovely pot of tea and some cake in the sunshine this afternoon in honour of a family birthday... at around four o'clock, in fact!

I love traditions. The Brits are especially good at “savoring” traditions. ❤️🥰

Most of our traditions are deliciously edible! LOL! 🍰

They're also mostly ridiculous! Come on, admit it: you know we're completely bonkers 🤣

I like afternoon tea, so I suppose that makes me a True Brit

Cucumber sandwiches were good enough for Oscar Wilde but I don't think they are served anywhere. Maybe The Ritz, I dunno.

I've just had a look at their website by way of research for this comment. I'm now a quivering wreck....

Expand full comment

What’s the verdict? Yay or nay to cuc sandwiches at the Ritz?

Expand full comment
author

Their website doesn't show the actual afternoon tea menu, so the jury's out as to whether cucumber sandwiches feature on it... but the prices of literally everything on their lunch and dinner menus are eye-watering....! 😱

The Plaza in NYC. They have a foofy High Tea. And probably the Ritz too.

The Ritz definitely does.

Oooooh, shall we go there for our next meet-up, Terry? They could probably manage to make you a cuppa to fit your unreasonable - sorry, exacting - specifications! 🤣

Haha. Adorable abbreviated. I wrote an essay about my abbreviation habit and that it could be blamed on NYC circa 1987. Of course now everything is abbreviated.

Hilarious from first to last, from foxes to wobbly tables! (I think Elaine may have been the hero of the day, taking the role of guide) Thank you so much for the wonderful photos. I feel I know you better now. The only photo I'd ever seen of your husband was in the gorgeous wedding photo when you both seemed so young. I was interested to see how distinguished he looks now. You have been a good influence on him. ha ha ha. You are tall, so he must be at least 6'5"?? I will treasure the photos of Terry, as he is actually SMILING in them. You are all so cute.

Awww Sharron, thank you so much! And yes, Elaine is AWESOME - and not only in a navigational context!

Thank you so much for that lovely compliment about our wedding photo. 😊 In fact we were married only nine-and-a-half years ago so we were already ancient! 🤣

And yes, he's 6'5"! Beautifully judged. 😘
