Thanks for reading, Mitchell! I think after the intensi-tea of my focus on the stuff for the last few weeks I've drained the tea theme dry for now - although I can't promise the subject won't crop up again in one of my letters to Terry - you know what he's like... 🤣

Bigelow's Mint Medley sounds like a swing band! 🎷 And yes - your cup would be marked 'BMM0' for sure!

Great picture of you, Rebecca, and that miniature tea set!

Ahh...tea...I thought it was either a Lipton tea bag left to stew with a slice of lemon or a shot of sweet burning tea, until I came to these shores...I quickly learnt to specify no milk no sugar or else it would automatically be served with both, a sickly mixture I could never stomach. I also learnt the universal refrain, whenever something was wrong: "I'll put the kettle on..." as though this was the salve for everything: the look of relief from the recipient, the nod of empathy from the kettle owner, everything on hold so the ritualistic brewing took place!

Thanks, Mya! Yes, 'I'll put the kettle on...' is always the beginning of everything being made to feel better!

My brother always struggles to be served a cup of tea with milk in the US - in diners he'd have to order 'a hot tea' and 'a glass of milk, please'.

I love this post, Rebecca! The stains on the teath 😉 are very relatable. I have to have my teeth whitened because of how much I drink coffee 🤷‍♀️

Thanks, Camille! There's always a payback to our pleasures, isn't there?! 🤣

Not if you drink proper tea, made properly. My teeth are as white as the driven snow. I had to stop smiling while driving because the reflected gleam from my teeth was causing a hazard.

🤣 The problem eased once I started taking a splash of milk in it again! 🤣

Glad you're looking out for the impact of your gleaming gnashers on road safety, though. A responsible move.

I could be wrong, but I think there may have been a teasmade in one of the Sherlocks. In that episode I believe the police blamed the teasmade for a fire.

Or maybe it was just a dream I had.

Ooooooh, could be, Julie! 😊

We inherited Jim's Grandad's Teasmade in its original packaging. I must dig it out to write about for a future post - I remember the words in the accompanying instructions are rather dated (in terms of which member of the household's job it is to make the tea, that is....). 🙄

Oh this made me smile Rebecca! Thanks for re-sharing this!

I'm a tea drinker and I too have been drinking tea since I was a wee girl! I remember sitting on my grandads knee, dunking biscuits in my morning cuppa, loving life.

I only drink Yorkshire Tea (my mum actually brought a stash over to Spain with her in her suitcase when she visited this week!) and I either have no milk or just a dash. I like my tea strong with no frills as you say.

I've been concerned with my teeth too and make the effort with my dental hygiene to try and counteract the impact. But I really don't think anything could make me give up a cup of the good stuff completely ☺️

We're kindred spirits in the art of tea, Lyndsay! I'm back up to my pre-lockdown levels of tea drinking now - so that's a lot more than I was drinking at the time I had originally published this post. I'm hoping that my dash of milk is mitigating the staining, even if just a little!

I'm so glad your mum brought you some more Yorkshire Tea! Keep those supply lines OPEN, I say! 🙌

I occasionally resent my couch for making me lay on it too! I feel your pain, I can't go cold tea-key off caffeine, I need to do it gradually or I am one with my couch.

The trials and tribulations of Rebecca’s ca-tea-strophy. Nothing like coming full circle when tea is involved. Have you ever had white tea? It’s quite good and doesn’t stain the teeth. I had no idea Lipton was a Brit. Here in the US one can find Lipton tea in any hospital cafeteria or dicey diner. It’s not my go to bag.

Ca-tea-strophy - that's an EPIC word!!! I've never heard of white tea - apart from as a descriptor for 'tea with milk' - I'm going to have to look that up! I owe it to my teeth. 🦷

I remember Dad bringing some jasmine tea home with him from a trip to the Far East - it was in the form of tiny, tiny balls. You'd pop one of the balls in to a cup, fill the cup with boiling water and watch as the jasmine flower would uncurl in front of you. Absolutely beautiful. I've just had a quick Google - this is what it looks like: https://www.adagiotea.co.uk/green/dragon_pearl.html?googleshopping=yes&gad=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwkNOpBhBEEiwAb3MvvX3-rZSxrxyoN2AIIB8zTlmhMQPuMU7DHUCEIyoYsN2yJefKN_BmCBoCJqAQAvD_BwE

‘Have I got Covid?’ I asked my husband when he got home. ‘I shouldn’t think so, but you’ve skipped your last two hundred cups of tea, so I’m not surprised you’re feeling rubbish.’ ha ha ha Only Rebecca Holden could write such an entertaining story about something as simple as making a cup of tea. By the penultimate paragraph I was heading to the kitchen to make myself a cup of tea -- which I NEVER do in the evening. I will be up till midnight now, but I could not stop myself.

I had to chuckle at the mention of Germans and their tea bags. I’m happy to report that loose leaf tea is now very popular. I enjoy loose leaf more than a bag but one of my current favorite teas comes in a round, tagless bag and I adore those. I love a good earl grey with some sugar and a splash of milk. There’s just something about it. ❤️

LOL Susi - and it's interesting that loose tea is popular - my pal Terry would approve of that (he doesn't hold with teabags...)!

Earl Grey's lovely - I have it once in a while as a treat. 😍 It doesn't give me quite the same 'feels' as half a pint of my favourite strong, strong, strong everyday brew, though.

I loved this. Also, I didn't realize tea stained so badly until I recently tried switching from coffee to tea and found my cups turned a horrid brown. Yikes! And my teeth? Well, surprisingly the coffee with at least an eighth cup of milk gets me through the day again. And I always thought milk was more protein than carbs. Lots of learning here.

Thanks so much, Sue! Gosh, yes - since we started using white enamel mugs in the campervan I've had to take to bleaching them when we get home from every trip! Our everyday ceramic mugs at home are okay, though - we just sling those in the dishwasher and they come up okay.

Milk's only 5g carbohydrate per 100ml, and of course a cup of tea doesn't require that much - but given that I was hooked up to a never-ending supply of tea with milk at that all-afternoon party, that was quite a lot of milk that I'd neglected to account for! 🤣 10g carbs typically raises my glucose by around 2.5mmol/l, and it all adds up, which is annoying. 🙄

Expand full comment

Yes, it certainly does. I only drink two cups of coffee a day, so no blood sugar issues, but yes, my body tells me when I've had too much sugar.

I enjoyed this post very much, I do love a cuppa myself. We don’t meet eye to eye on tea colour, I do like it strong but I like a good bit of milk, so it looks like He-Man, or should I say Tea-Man!

Like a lot of British people I can’t get through the day without tea. I so wanted a teasmaid! I now limit myself to four cups a day, this is enough of a fix and no caffeine after 2pm. The rest of the time I drink herbal tea. Normal coffee sends me into hyper mode, so only decaf. Funny how we all have a tea profile!

That's a good idea, to set a limit! I need to do something similar - since I'd first written this post my intake - in-tea-k? - has been creeping ever higher...! The fact that I can successfully treat a headache with a strong cup of tea is absolutely not a good sign - I think I need to ease up on the stuff. 😳

Just about time to put the kettle on for my first cup of the day. I’m travelling at the moment with an elderly lady and she finds regular cups of tea essential so we’re having fun. Reminds me I’ll need to fill the kettle so I can get the thermos preheated too. We’ll be painting along one of Australia’s major rivers for the next week, so having our tea supplies with us will make life very pleasant. Definitely tea bags for this week though. (And definitely all with strings! The little subtle differences throughout the world...)

Have a lovely week dear Rebecca. Thanks for another terrific read.

I think the only stringless ones you can buy over here are for teapots! And a wonderful find in the TINY little place we’re staying at for our first three nights - the Post Office sells Devonshire teas with huge pots of wonderful tasty tea leaf tea! Makes me realise just how tasteless teabags have gotten over the past few years!! So we’ve had Devonshires for the past two afternoons. Heading westward later this morning. Hugs dear Rebecca.
